Be Fair/Buy Fair: The Effects of Fair Trade
When you buy coffee, a cotton shirt, a bouquet of flowers, something made with sugar, or any number of other goods and products, your simple decision could make a huge difference to the lives of thousands.
In developing nations, producers are often at the mercy at more powerful buyers. However, Fair Trade helps family farmers gain direct access to international markets, as well as to develop the business capacity necessary to compete in the global marketplace. By learning how to market their own harvests, Fair Trade farmers are able to bootstrap their own businesses and receive a fair price for their products. This leads to higher family living standards, thriving communities and more sustainable farming practices. Your choice to purchase Fair Trade Certified™ coffee empowers farming families to take care of themselves without developing dependency on foreign aid.

FACES OF FAIR TRADE

A Fair Trade scholarship gave Alfredo Rayo Granados a chance to attend university.
Fair Trade Means Education… and Opportunity
“As the son of a Fair Trade coffee producer, I have an opportunity to develop myself.”
--Alfredo Rayo Granados, Matagalpa, Nicaragua.
Every Sunday, after a long week of working in the coffee fields, Alfredo Rayo Granados attends Adventista University in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. Scholarships from his co-operative, CECOCAFEN, are helping him realize his dream of becoming a history professor.
The scholarships cover the cost of transport, meals and books. Without them, Alfredo says he would not be able to attend college. Nor would his two older sisters, Maria and Darling. All three members of the Granados family have benefited from the higher prices the co-op receives for coffee through Fair Trade.
“As the son of a Fair Trade coffee producer, I have an opportunity to develop myself,” Alfredo says. “It has been a great factor in our ability to survive.”
